Our family got involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters when my 17 yr. old son came home from Religious Ed. class and said he was going to be a Big Brother to earn community project hours. Concerned that a short term project might make it harder for a young boy to have someone in his life for only a short time, I asked my son if maybe he would consider a long term involvement. He was ok with that and after a discussion with our younger daughter as to what it would mean to our family, our son was matched with an 8 yr. old boy. Immediately, our whole family fell in love with him. He spent time with my son and our family. Soon he seemed to be part of the family and we all looked forward to the time he spent with us. We had the best times just hanging out at the house, playing board games, making cookies and just being a family. The time we spent with our Little opened our eyes to the fact that not everyone had an easy time being just a kid. As the relationship with our Little continued, our son went off to college. To keep with the program, we became a Big Family. Our Little accompanied us to the college to visit our son. We wanted him to know that you can achieve anything you set out to do. Not all times were easy and we did have a few problems. With the help of the staff at BBBS, we worked through them and became stronger as a family. Today, our Little is 21 yrs. old. We see him occasionally now. He still has to find his way through life and we hope the relationship he had with our family will have a positive impact on what he does with his life.
