Fond du Lac’s First, But THIRD annual, ‘Un‑Run’

Sick of all those pretentious 13.1 and 26.2 stickers staring at you from the rear windshield of the car in front of you? Well, now’s your chance to “earn” your very own 0.5K sticker (legal disclaimer: sticker may or may not be included).

But let’s be real.  While we did hold an event last year, it wasn’t really a “normal” event, so let’s officially call this thing the VERSON 2.5 OF THE BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS 0.5K. Yes, that’s right, it’s the “two and a half version of our annual 0.5K” – and it’s back and bigger than ever in 2021.

Say What?

That’s right.  Once again, there’s no need to be scared this Halloween.  Our Halloweenie 0.5K is all treats and no tricks.

This 21-and-older event (please leave the kiddos and the pets at home) (YES, we’re serious, no kids in strollers and no Fido) will be held in Historic Downtown Fond du Lac, Wisconsin — stretching all the way from Forest Avenue to Second Street (or vice versa, and back again). Yup. Two blocks.  Count ‘em – TWO! Straight down Main Street (and, well back again, twice, if you want to get all technical).

And because it’s Halloween, you really should come in costume (but keep in mind you must be able to show your face to compare with your ID). We’ll have cash prizes for best dressed group along with individual participant.  So, get your co-workers together and participate in this great teambuilding opportunity and start thinking of your best group costume.  Be creative, and while we all like to live on the edge, keep it decent as we’re raising money for local kids.

So How Exactly Does This Work?

Let’s face it, things are still ‘different’ and we want to play nice in the sandbox.  We’re encouraging social distancing for registration to spread the process out.  Please pay attention here.  No seriously, please pay attention.

PARTICIPANTS

There will be two waves (well, not literally waves, but you get the idea) of regular participants.  It’s going to cost you $40, but you get your choice of starting at 5:30 PM or 6:00 PM.  Furthermore, to help keep things spread out a bit more, you will have the option of starting at two different places.  Hypothetically, let’s call one North and the other South, or something.  On your mark. Get set. Register!

VIP

Come on. Admit it. You think you’re rather important, maybe even very important. Well, we agree! That’s why we have a VIP package with extra perks just for you. Treat yourself to our $75 VIP package.  You don’t need to select 5:30 or 6:00 to register, you show up when you want to (as long as it’s between 5:30 and 6:30 please).  You get to register indoors at our Haunted VIP Lounge (The Annex inside The Coliseum Sports Bar & Grill). We also have a private bartender for the VIPs so you don’t have to wait in line for your beverages. And if that’s not enough special treatment we have a VIP swag bag just for you. Ready to be treated like Halloweenie royalty? Register now!

HOW LONG IS THIS GOING TO TAKE?

Well, let’s say you start at 5:30.  If we start on time (no promises), and for those who want to actually run, the race will probably end about 5:33 p.m. for you.

But that’s not the point.  You get that, right??

For the rest of us “un-runners” or “underachievers,” just take your time. We’ll have a variety of places to put your feet up along the racecourse. Stop and grab a bite to eat — just like last year, lots of carbs will be available throughout the route for you to enjoy. Thirsty? Have some beer, wine, coffee, and even a Witch’s Brew. We might even have some water if you need it!

And be sure to take a break and take a picture at one of our selfie stations.  And although we hope it doesn’t happen, we want to be prepared. If you injure yourself along this grueling course, stop at the Blister Station for your very own Tootsie Pop and Barbie Band-Aid sponsored by SSM Health.  One of the selfie stations will also allow you to vote for the best Halloween costumes (yes, you actually get a vote!).

What more could you ask for? A band, you say? Sure, why not?  We like music too. Listen to The Nix, found on the corner of 1st and Main Street.  They’ll be playing until 8:00 PM so stop and listen, dance along with the beat, whatever makes you happy. Because remember, this event is all about making YOU happy. Then join us just before 8:00 p.m. come (if you dare) and see the best dressed costumes be announced.

Hopefully you’ve finished the race by then, but if not, no worries. You’ll still get a participation medal.  Or something – we’re still figuring that piece out, but it’ll be cool, we think.

Still thirsty after the run? Local businesses will be open with beverage specials and more surprises announced later in the evening.

Too tired to drive home after the race? Stay at the Hotel Retlaw in downtown Fond du Lac on Thursday, October 28, 2021, at a discounted room rate of $99.00, plus tax. To make your guest room reservation, please call (920) 204-0400 and ask for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Halloweenie 0.5K discount or book online at www.thehotelretlaw.com right up until race day.  Based upon availability. Again, to receive the discounted room rate, be sure to ask for the Brothers Big Sisters Halloweenie 0.5K special rate. Guest room not included with race registration.

Wait, What do I Get?

  • Participation Medal or even better equivalent
  • Awesome BBBS Winter Hat
  • Bragging rights

And What Does BBBS Get out of It?

Here’s the best part, all the event’s proceeds go to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Fond du Lac County and helps local children.  Who doesn’t want to help local kids?

But wait, there’s more!

Who wants a costume contest? You do!

  • Take a picture of your individual or group costume at the selfie station located in Top Shelf
  • Vote for best costume before 7:45 p.m.
  • Winners will be announced at 8 p.m. by the band

Is it inspiration you need? Here are some costume photos from past years…
